A word from Diane

It is a scarf that tells a true epic. Kermit Oliver excels in this art of storytelling in images: here, each scene is a gateway to a myth, a belief, a necessity. The gods of war confront the dark forces while, in counterpoint, life goes on: people sow, dance, survive. This coexistence of the sacred and the everyday is very powerful. The central motif represents the great circle of Native American totem animals around a quartered shield depicting the four ages of life. The three female figures represent the Three Sisters: corn, beans and squash — the sacred nourishing triad of Native American cultures. The turtle motif (visible beneath the woman with the geese) refers to Turtle Island, the Native American name for the North American continent... The palette, deeply rooted in the earth, reinforces this impression of authenticity and gives the scarf an almost mineral elegance. A strong, deeply inhabited piece. An absolute marvel in an extremely rare state of preservation.
